Computers are sure fun, aren't they? You can play games, do your homework, go shopping, meet other kids that share your interests, and see pictures of interesting people, places and things thousands of miles from your home.
But just like the real world, not everyone on the Internet is nice or has good intentions. That's why it's important to always be smart, be safe, and beware.

Never give out personal information such as your address, phone number, or the name and location of your school or your parents' workplace, without your parents' permission. |
Never send anyone your picture, or anything else, without permission |
Don't respond to messages that are mean or make you feel uncomfortable. Tell your parent right away if this happens, and remember, it is never your fault when someone sends you something mean-spirited. |
Never agree to meet anyone in person that you've met online, without talking it over with your parents. Any meetings, if your parents approve, should be in an open, public space with plenty of other people around. |

Tell your parents right away if you see anything online that makes you uncomfortable. |

Don't ever let anyone you've met online visit you in person, unless your parent has agreed and will be present. Ideally, these meetings should be away from your home even if there are plenty of responsible grown ups around. |

Remember, people online may not be who they say they are someone who says they are an 11-year-old girl or 10-year-old boy could be someone else entirely! |

Never give out your passwords to anyone, and never fill out those pop up screens. Reputable companies will not ask for that information via e-mail or instant message; if in doubt ask your parent. |

Wait - we almost forgot the most important part! Have fun! The Internet is a fun and educational place. You just have to be smart and know how to use it. Play games, do your homework, talk to other kids who share your interests, visit states and countries far away from the comfort of your home or school. Just follow Shrimp Louise's guidelines for safety! |
